► Drugs

We will all encounter drugs throughout our lives, whether for legal medicinal purposes, or illegal substance use and abuse. The way to shape your future in the healthiest possible way is by knowing the facts, and knowing how you feel about the issues of drugs.

Drug use can seriously affect your life, and the lives of others around you, for example:
• Physical and mental health can seriously decline, and simple everyday tasks become a real effort after heavy drug use
• Relationships with friends and family members can change due to the breakdown of trust
• Money worries can become a big problem, paying debts from drug use can become impossible as use gets heavier
• To pay for the habit of drug use can lead to dishonest means of getting money, stealing and dead end jobs being the only option in some cases

Derby College does not tolerate the use of substances and being under the influence of substances whilst on the premises. The college will alert the relevant authorities and support services for the students using drugs. The suspension or permanent exclusion of a student found using drugs is also part of college policy.

If you or someone you know has started using drugs, don’t be afraid to ask for help! For a bit of advice or some useful facts you can try the internet, and support services:

From 4 October 2010 the Student Support team will be working with Derbyshire County Council's drug and alcohol services to help create a confidential service for young people19 and under at the Ilkeston and Heanor sites. This may be people who are having trouble with drugs and/or alcohol. This will be based at field road in ‘the chat room’ and will be running between 12-1.30pm every Monday. It is possible to make an appointment, or you can just drop in on the specified days.

While some people experience drugs and believe they are in control and drugs have never affected their lifestyle – there is another end of the spectrum, where lifestyles can be very different, and it is important that all individuals are treated with respect no matter what their lifestyle choice. Everyone has the right to help and support!
