The Derbyshire County Council announced on Wednesday 14th May 2008, that they will be reducing the 60mph stretch on the A308 (outside of BH campus) to 40mph in the upcoming weeks. This is after the five month ongoing campaign from the Derby College Students' Union finally took effect. The students and staff from Broomfield Hall campus and the local Morley residents are ecstatic with the results and look forward to using a safer road.
The campaign however will still be in place as the reduction is set to a eighteen month trial to see whether the signage and the other traffic calming measures have been successful - they will monitor this by conducting a new survey after the trial period is over to find out the new average speed limit of the motorists.
If they find out that the average speed is above 40mph then the new official speed limit for the stretch will be raised to 50mph. It is therefore the campaigns mission to make sure that this doesn't take effect and that the 40mph speed limit is kept. We will therefore be asking fellow staff members, students and local residents to download supporting letters from this site once the new speed limit is set in place and show their support for the new speed limit. We will be providing materials which will include supporting letters to sign and new petitions.

Residential Success
The local residents at Morley seem to be making headway with Derbyshire County Council with their requests for a 30mph speed limit outside the Morley School and a Puffin crossing - see their website for more information on their campaign:

WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!
Mike Foulds (SU Vice President) and concerned Broomfield Hall students present petitions to the Derbyshire County Council
15/2/08
We would like to thank everyone who signed the petitions and postcards, we presented almost 1,000 names to the Derbyshire County Council on Friday 15th February 2008, who have said they will be carrying out a full investigation into the possibility of reducing the speed limit further and putting traffic calming measures in place. We are still collecting petitions so if you have any to hand in please do so, this will be a continuing campaign until appropriate action is taken.
Evening Telegraph news story 14/02/08

The Derby College Students' Unions 'Make it safe, make it 40!' campaign has been up and running since January 2008 and will be an ongoing campaign until the speed limit on the A608 is permanently reduced to 40mph.
We have been working hard to fight for the reduction of the current 60mph speed limit on the stretch outside the Broomfield Hall campus to be reduced to 40mph to make a safer road for Derby College pedestrians and motorists and to ensure safety of the Morley community and the local children who use the road to get to school.
The campaign initially urged students, staff and the local residents to sign petitions, postcards and letters which objected to the proposal of the speed limit reduction to 50mph.
Nick Billinge, the Students' Unions General Manager took concerned studenst to the Derbyshire County Council Headquarters in Matlock on Friday 15th February 2008 and they presented all of the gathered materials to Mike Ashworth the DCC Deputy Strategic Director and Brian Lucas, the DCC Community Saftey Committee member, over 900 people had signed the petitions which were handed over to them along with 70 individual postcards and letters.

Nick Billinge said after the meeting "this was a very positive start to a working relationship between the local residents, Derby College and the County Council to consider various ways forward to making the road safer for all it's users".
Mike Ashworth and Brian Lucas explained that this wil not be an overnight solution and will require careful consideration to find the most appropriate solutions that meet all the regulatory requirements, and provide realistic ways to improve the safety of this stretch of road. A full investigation will now take place by Derby County Council officials to consider the points raised by the College, students and local residents; and look into the logistics of reducing the speed limit to 40mph and traffic calming measures.

About our campaign
We are leading a campaign to request the lowering of the speed limit to 40mph on the A608 road which is just outside of the Broomfield Hall campus in Morley. The stretch's speed limit is currently set at the national speed limit (60mph), and is causing the BH students, staff and visitors concern especially in light of a recent fatal accident which took the lives of four young adults only 300 metres away from the main college drive.
