Representation is the most important part of any Students' Union; we are here for ALL learners of Derby College and we are run by Learners for Learners.
If any one or any group has any issues with any aspect of Derby College we are here to represent those views to the College. From teaching staff (grassroots) all the way up to the governors we have the opportunity to engage and promote those views.
Every teaching group within College should have two student reps in them. Do you know who yours are? Do you have any? Not only do we sit regularly on major decision-making boards within College but we also have regular 1-2-1 meetings with the Principal, David Croll, of Derby College, the Deputy Principals and Vice Principals but, we also sit on smaller boards such as Health and Safety, Diversity and Equality, Quality and Curriculum and we are also consulted in decision regarding Learner Involvement, Planning and Development and many other issues throughout College.
Throughout the National Union of Students (NUS) Wednesday afternoons have been seen as enrichment times were students do not learn in the classroom but go out and engage in sporting, skill building etc... courses. We at Derby College Students' Union are fighting to get Wednesday afternoons free for you to do this and already at Masons Place they have this in place for next year (2007 - 2008).
The NUS are already running a national campaign on Scholerest, the catering service for most learning institutions, and now we have regular meetings with the catering managers and we have an excellent rapor whereby we are jointly working to improve the service for both the Learners and Scholerest.
